Pumps for corrosive liquids: choosing the right model
At Flero (Brescia, Italy), Nuova Darimpianti designs and builds chemical pumps and industrial pumps for corrosive liquids, machined from solid PP, PVC, PVDF and HDPE. In every model no metal part comes into contact with the pumped liquid, which is why they are used as plastic pumps for acids, alkalis and aggressive liquids in the chemical, pharmaceutical, steel, electroplating, energy and tanning industries. Choosing a model starts with three questions: how the pump will be installed, how hazardous the fluid is, and whether it contains solids.
Horizontal centrifugal pumps with mechanical seal
The PMC-1 and PMC-2 are installed alongside the tank and fitted with a single or double flushed mechanical seal. Built in PP, PVC or HDPE, they cover transfer, recirculation and process feed duties. The PMC-2 is the monobloc version for high flow rates.
Magnetic drive pumps
The HTM has no mechanical seal: torque reaches the impeller through a magnetic coupling with a sealed containment shell. In PP or PVDF, up to 90 °C, it is the model to choose among pumps for hazardous liquids when a leak is not acceptable. It needs clean liquids and must not run dry.
Tank-mounted vertical pumps
Vertical pumps work with the casing submerged and have no suction line to prime. The VSK has a cantilever shaft with no guides and suits liquids with solids or moderate abrasiveness. The VGA, in PP, PVC or PVDF up to 90 °C, adds a ceramic shaft end guide. The VL/VLK reaches 2500 mm in length, with a bearing lantern and elastic coupling. The EVFA-N, an external flushed vertical pump in PP with a 1450 rpm motor, is built for large transfers and continuous low-head recirculation.
What we need to recommend a pump
To propose the right pump we need the fluid and its concentration, the operating temperature, any solids content, the flow rate, the head and the type of installation. From there we define model, material and seal arrangement.
Frequently asked questions
Magnetic drive or mechanical seal?
The HTM magnetic drive pump removes the risk of seal leakage and is preferred for hazardous, clean fluids. The mechanically sealed PMC pumps cope better with variable operating conditions; a double flushed seal adds a barrier to the outside.
When is a vertical pump the better choice?
When drawing from a tank or an open vessel accessible from the top. The pump always has a flooded inlet and there are fewer potential leak points.
Which material for acid pumps?
It depends on the acid, its concentration and the temperature. PP is the most versatile, PVDF offers the broadest chemical resistance; compatibility is checked against a chemical resistance chart.
